88: The 2004 Tsunami made people realize that mangroves can serve as a reliable safety hedge against coastal calamities. How do mangroves function as a safety hedge?
(a) The mangrove swamps separate the human settlements from the sea by a wide zone in which people neither live nor venture out.
(b) The mangroves provide both food and medicines which people are in need of after any natural disaster.
(c) The mangrove trees are tall with dense canopies and serve as an excellent shelter during a cyclone or Tsunami.
(d) The mangrove trees do not get uprooted by storms and tides because of their extensive roots.
Explanation:
Mangroves are various kinds of trees up to medium height and shrubs that grow in saline coastal sediment habitats in the tropics and subtropics - mainly between latitudes 25 degree N and 25 degree S.
For thousands of years, mangrove forests have provided a natural buffer against cyclones and other storms that often hit the shores of India. Mangroves prevent coastal erosion, and act as a barrier against typhoons, cyclones, hurricanes, and tsunamis, helping to minimize damage done to property and life. Mangrove tree species that inhabit lower tidal zones can block or buffer wave action with their stems, which can measure high and serveral metres in circumference. The trees both shield the land from wind and trap sediment in their roots, maintaining a shallow slope on the seabed that absorbs the energy of tidal surges.
Thousands of people lost their livers in India's Tsunami effect in 2004. There are 172 families that got saved in a small village called Tirunalatoppu in Tamilanadu sate. The reason is that the Mangrove trees, which grow in sea water.
