Constituent Assembly:
-In 1934 M.N. Roy forwarded the idea of Constituent assembly.
-In 1935, the Indian National Congress, for the 1st time officially demanded a Constituent assembly to frame the constitution of India.
-In 1940, the demand was finally accepted by the British Government which was also known as "August Offer".
-The election for the constituent assembly (for 296 seats allotted to the British India Provinces) were held in July-August 1946.
-The seats in each Province were distributed among the three main communities, Muslims, Sikh and general.
-INC won 208 seats, Muslim League won 73 seats and independent won 15 seats.
-Mahatma Gandhi and M A Jinnah were not the part of the Constituent assembly.
-The Constituent Assembly held its first sitting on 9th December 1946, Muslim League boycotted the sitting.
-Sachidanand Sinha presided the first meting, later on Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected the permanent President of the constituent assembly.
-The Constitution was enacted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, and came into effect on 26 January 1950.
-It is the longest written constitution of the world.
-On 26 November 1949 provisions of citizenship and provisional Parliament came into force.
-The date 26 January was chosen to commemorate the Purna Swaraj declaration of independence of 1930.
-At the time of commencement, the constitution had 395 articles in 22 parts and 8 schedules.
