Shahjahan (1627-1658):
-Shahjahan (Khurram) was the son of Jagat Gosain (princess of Jodhpur) & Jahangir
-He married Mumtaz Mahal, daughter of Asaf Khan.
-Became the ruler after murdering all possible contenders to the throne.
-He suppressed the rebellions under Bundela Chiefs, Juhar Singh & Khan Jahan Lodi.
-In 1632 A.D, he ousted portuguese from Hugli.
-In 1636 A.D, he annexed the Nizamshahi Kingdom of Ahmadnagar & Aurangzeb was appointed the Viceroy of Deccan.
-His reign was described by French travellers, Bernier & Tavernier & the Italian traveller, Manucci.
-Peter Mundy described the famine that occurred during Shah Jahan's time.
-Shah Jahan erected many splendid monuments, the most famous of which is the Taj Mahal at Agra, built in 1632 - 1648 as a tomb for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.
-He was also the founder of the new imperial capital called Shahjahanabad, now known as Old Delhi.
-Other important buildings of Shah Jahan's rule were the Diwan-i-Am and Diwan-i-Khas in the Red Fort Complex in Delhi and the Moti Masjid in the Lahore Fort.
