Religion at the time of Rig Vedic Period

Religion at the time of Rig Vedic Period:

-People were mostly 'theists' who had more of a spiritual rather than a scientific outlook.

-Natural forces like wind, rain, etc were worshipped.

-Various deities in the order of importance were given as- Indra (War), Agni (Fire), Varuna (Water), Yama (Death), Rudra (Healing Herbs), Pushan (Jungle), Savitri (Solar deity), Aditi (Eternity), Maruts (Storms) & Demi gods like Gandharvas (Musicians), Vishwadevas (Intermediate Gods) etc.

-These gods were classified into three orders:-

--'Prithvisthana' - Terrestrial- eg: Agni, Soma, etc.
--'Antarakshasthana' - Aerial - eg: Indira, Rudra, Vishnu etc.
--'Dyusthana' - Celestial- eg - Surya, Varuna, Mitra etc.

-The centre of Vedic religious ideas was sacrifice eg:Griha Karmani; ceremonies, Soma sacrifices, etc.
