First Buddhist Council
First Buddhist Council:
-Held soon after the death of the Buddha in 483 B.C.
-It was presided by monk Mahakasyapa.
-It was held in a hall erected by Magadha king Ajatasatru outside the Saptaparni Cave in Rajagriha.
-Its objective was to maintain and preserve the purity of Buddha teachings (i.e. the Buddha's sayings (suttas) and monastic rules (Vinaya)).
-First Buddhist Council resulted in the compilation of Sutta Pitaka by Ananda and Vinaya Pitaka by Upali.
