Chola Empire

Chola Empire:

-Cholas were the feudatories of Pallavas.

-Founded by Vijayalaya.

-They built the temple Nishumbhasudini (Durga) as a sign of their rise to power (A.D. 850).

-Under Rajaraja Chola I and his son Rajendra Chola I, the dynasty became a military, economic and cultural power in South Asia and South-East Asia.

-Rajaraja Chola I built the Brihadeswara temple at Tanjore.

-Rajendra Chola I led an expidition to the Ganga Valley & defeated Mahipala I (Palas) & thus assumed the title of (Ganga i-konda) & established a new capital, 'Gangai-konda cholapuram'.

-Rajendra Chola I built an artificial tank, called Chodagar.

-Kulottunga II of Chola, united the kingdoms of Chola and Chalukya.

-Kulonunga III, was the last great Chola king & after him Cholas continued to exist but as local chieftains.
