Interior of the Earth
Interior of the Earth:
The upper most layer of the earth is called Crust, It is the thinnest of all the layers. It is about 35 km on the continental masses and only 5 km on the ocean floors.
The main mineral constituent of the continental mass are Silica and Alumina. It is thus called SIAL.
The main mineral constituent of the ocean mass are Silica and Magnesium. It is thus called SIMA.
Just beneath the crust is the mantle which extends upto a depth of 2900 km below the crust.
The inner most layer of the earth is called Core and its radius is 3500 km. It is mainly made up of Iron and Nickle
The crust forms only 0.5 percent of the volume of the earth whereas Mantle and Core constitutes 16 percent and 83 percent of the Earth.
