- Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) discharges the frontline extension education responsibilities through a network of 261 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (Farm Science Centres) in the country.
- During 1996-97, the Government planned to establish 119 more Krishi Vigyan Kendras.
- After this, during the Ninth plan, it is proposed to establish 120 more Krishi Vigyan Kendras.
- According to the agriculture department, these Vigyan Kendras will organise Employment-oriented Training Programmes for the farmers (including the women and rural youth). These centres will spread the new agriculture techniques among the farmers.
- These centres will mainly be run by the distinguished voluntary institutions which are constantly working for the development of agriculture and village society, by the State Agriculture Universities and by the State Governments.
