- KSSSY-2001 has been launched in the country since July 1, 2001.
- Initially this scheme has been introduced in 50 districts of the country.
- Labour Ministry with Life Insurance Corporation of India have jointly launched this scheme so as to provide social security to agricultural labourers.
- Persons between age of 18-50 can join the scheme minimum membership of the group at commencement should be 20.
- More than 30 crores of agricultural labourers will get life and accident insurance as well as pension benefits.
- The beneficiary under this scheme contributes one rupee per day (i.e., Rs. 365 per year) while the government contributes two rupees per day (i.e., Rs. 730 per year) for every beneficiary.
- A sum of Rs. 20,000 is given in case of natural death while Rs. 50,000 will be given in accidental cases if the age of insured labour is below 60 years.
- On partial permanent disability due to accident, the amount payable is Rs. 25,000.
- Besides, a lump sum survival benefit is paid to the member at the end of every 10 years after entry into the scheme.
- Pension is paid to members on reaching age 60.
The Unorganized Workers' Social Security Act 2008
- The Act has the objective of providing social security to unorganized workers. The Unorganised Workers' Social Security Rules 2009 have also been framed.
- The Act has come into force w.ef. May 16, 2009.
- It provides for constitution of a National Social Security Board and State Social Security Boards which will recommend social security schemes for these workers.
- National Social Security Board was constituted in August 2009.
- The Board has made some recommendations regarding extension of social security schemes to cerwin additional segmems of unorganized workers.
- A National Social Security Fund with initial allocation of Rs. 1000 croreto support schemes for weavers, toddy tappers, rickshaw pullers, beedi workers etc. has also been set up.
