Prime Minister's Integrated Urban Poverty Eradication Programme (PMIUPEP)
- The Prime Minister's Integrated Urban Poverty Eradication Programme (PMIUPEP) was launched on November 18, 1995.
- The general objective of PMIUPEP was to attack the several root causes of urban poverty simultaneously.
- Besides, the objectives of employment generation and skill development, the PMIUPEP also aimed at effective achievements of social sector goal, community empowerment coveragence through sustainable support system, environment improvement and shelter upgradation.
- This scheme was firstly implemented at Chengnacheri of Kottayam District of Kerala.
- The programme is applicable to all urban agglomerations with a population ranging between 50,000 and 1 ,00,000 as per 1991 census, subject to the condition that elections to local bodies have been held.
- Under this plan, efforts were being made to create new opportunities of employment.
- The unemployed persons were trained in handicrafts and were encouraged to adopt self-employment ventures.
- Enterprise units could be established at the cost of Rs. 1 lakh under this self-employment scheme in which the beneficiary had to bear 25% of total cost. 15% amount of the project cost was provided in the form of subsidy to the beneficiary but maximum limit of subsidy was Rs. 7,500.
