- Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), a 100 per cent centrally sponsored scheme was launched on December 25, 2000.
- The prime objective of the PMGSY was, to provide connectivity to all unconnected habitations in the rural areas having population of more than 500 persons, through goods all-weather roads. In respect of the Hill States (North-East, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand), Desert Areas and Tribal (Schedule-V) Areas, the objective is to connect habitations with a population of 250 persons and above.
- Under Bharat Nirman, goal has been set to provide connectivity to all the habitations with population of more than 1000 in the plain areas and habitations with a population of 500 or more in hilly and tribal areas in a time bound manner by 2009.
- The systematic upgradation of the existing rural road networks is also an integral component of the scheme.
- Since inception, projects totalling about 544462 km of road to connect 144717 habitations have been cleared.
- A total of 399979 km. road length has been completed and new connectivity has been provided to over 97838 habitations upto March 2014. New connectivity of 248919 kms has been achieved.
