Jawahar Rozgar Yojana (JRY)
- In the last year of the Seventh plan, a broad rural employment programme named Jawabar Rojgar Yojana (IRY) was started on April 1, 1989 by dissolving the National Rural Employment Programme (NREP) and Rural Landless Employment Guarantee Programme (RLEGP).
- Since 1993-94, the JRY was implemented in the following three streams:
First stream :- Comprising of general works under IRY and two sub-schemes namely, the Indira Awas Yojana (IA Y) and Million Wells Scheme (MWS).
Second stream :- Second stream of IRY (also called as the intensified JRY) was implemented in 120 identified districts with additional allocation.
Third stream :- Third stream of JRY consists of Special and Innovative projects.
- JRY was one of the major wage employment programmes. It was implemented in all the villages of the country through the Panchayati Raj Institutions.
- It contributed to a great extent in creating durable rural infrastructure which has a critical importance in the development of village economy thereby improving the standard of living of the rural poor.
